Privacy Policy

Effective Date: March 1, 2024

At the Iraqi American Cultural Center, we are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring transparency in how we collect, use, and safeguard your personal information. As a non-profit organization dedicated to serving our community, we value the trust you place in us when you visit our website, donate, attend events, or engage with our programs.

Who We Are

Our website address is: https://iraqiamerican.org.

Information We Collect and Why We Collect It

Donations and Payments

When you make a donation, purchase tickets for an event, or buy merchandise through our website, we collect your name, billing address, email address, phone number, and payment details.

  • Purpose: This information is necessary to securely process your transaction, issue tax-deductible donation receipts, and maintain financial records required for compliance.
  • Third-Party Processors: We do not store financial details or credit card numbers directly on our servers. All transactions are securely handled by trusted, PCI-compliant third-party payment gateways.

Event Registration and Memberships

If you sign up for memberships, cultural programs, language classes, or community events, we collect your contact details and any relevant preferences you provide.

  • Purpose: We use this information to manage attendee lists, customize program delivery, and keep you informed about schedules or updates.

Comments and Forum Interactions

When visitors leave comments on our site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to assist in spam detection.

  • Gravatar Integration: An anonymized string created from your email address (a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to verify usage. The Gravatar service privacy policy is accessible at https://automattic.com/privacy/. Upon approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public within the context of your comment.

Media and File Uploads

If you upload images or documents to the website (such as community submissions or scholarship applications), you should avoid uploading files with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from public images hosted on the site.

Communications

If you sign up for our newsletter or contact us via a web form, we collect your name and email address. You may opt out of receiving our educational or promotional emails at any time by clicking the “unsubscribe” link provided in the communication.

Cookies

  • Comments: If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies last for one year.
  • Account Login: If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser. When you log in, we establish several cookies to save your login information and screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. Selecting “Remember Me” extends your login persistence to two weeks. Logging out removes these cookies.
  • Content Publishing: If you edit or publish an article or community post, an additional cookie is saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data, simply indicates the post ID of the article edited, and expires after 1 day.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles or pages on this site may include embedded content (e.g., videos, images, maps, social media feeds). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website directly.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Data Sharing and Disclosure

We respect your privacy and do not sell, rent, or trade our donor or user lists to third parties for marketing purposes. We share information only under the following limited conditions:

  • Service Providers: With trusted third-party vendors who assist us in operating our website, managing databases, sending newsletters, or handling transactions, subject to strict confidentiality agreements.
  • Legal Obligations: If required by law, subpoena, or government regulation to protect the rights, property, or safety of the organization, our members, or the public.

How Long We Retain Your Data

  • User Content: If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This allows us to recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
  • Registered Users: For users who register on our website (if any), we store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
  • Financial and Donor Records: Donation logs and financial transaction histories are securely kept for the minimum duration required to satisfy legal, tax, and accounting rules.

Your Rights Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site, have left comments, or have actively donated to the organization, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
